History

Flushing is known as the birthplace of religious freedom and the first horticultural nursery as well as the home of some well-known historical Queens landmarks. Walking distance from the core of the transit hub in downtown Flushing is a plethora of local historical amenities such as the following:

The Queens Historical Society is also located in Flushing and housed in Kingsland Homestead in Weeping Beech Park. The Queens Botanical Garden is also within walking distance on the south end of the district. Downtown Flushing neighbors Flushing Meadows Corona Park and Willets Point on the west, which is home to Shea Stadium and the "Mets" and the U.S.T.A. National Tennis Center.

Transit Hub, Vibrant Commercial District & Financial Center

Nearly 100,000 people travel through the downtown Flushing area on a daily basis. Flushing, Main Street is home to the #7 subway train or "International Express", with 21 bus lines, the Long Island Railroad, and a yellow cab taxi stand outside of Manhattan.

The commercial businesses in our district range from retail, professional offices and food establishments to financial institutions and service providers. The majority of businesses in our district are either retail, financial or food establishments. The financial strength of the district is calculated to be over $3 billion.

In addition to the rich history of Flushing, our district offers unique dining options. The food establishments range from small delis and cafes and bars to large restaurants and catering halls. The diversity of the cuisine in our district also sets us apart from others and prompted us to create a restaurant association called the "Destination Flushing Cuisine Association", just to promote this aspect of our neighborhood.

Destination of Choice

The combination of a rich history, bustling transit hub, vibrant commercial district and financial strength sets downtown Flushing apart from other neighborhoods and makes our district a destination of choice for everyone from throughout the metropolitan region.
